Our Historic Black Renaissance Districts wall print features some of the iconic neighborhoods that thrived as cultural hubs for African Americans, culminating in unprecedented advancements in art, literature and music.
Harlem, New York - At it's height, Harlem was the epicenter of American culture. The neighborhood bustled with African American-owned and run publishing houses and newspapers, music companies, playhouses, nightclubs, and cabarets. The literature, music, and fashion they created defined culture and “cool” for blacks and white alike, in America and around the world.
Bronzeville, Chicago -From the 1920s through the 1950s, Chicago's South Side was the center for African-American culture and business. Bronzeville was well known for its nightclubs and dance halls. The jazz, blues, and gospel music that developed with the migration of Southern musicians attracted scores of diverse listeners and admirers.
Beale Street, Memphis - Beale Street, established in 1841 and one of the most iconic streets in America, became a thriving area for Black commerce and culture around the time of the Civil War. Beale Street was also home to many Black-owned businesses, clubs, restaurants, and shops and was the headquarters of Ida B. Wells’ anti-segregationist newspaper, Free Speech.
7th Street, West Oakland - In the 1940s, West Oakland’s Seventh Street was hailed as a cultural haven for African-Americans. During the day, it served as a bustling place of commerce hosting a myriad of businesses such as markets, cleaners, restaurants, hotels and gyms. At night, its many nightclubs offered a thriving social scene that drew the hottest names in jazz from around the country.
U Street, Washington D.C. - was known as Black Broadway. From the early 1900s into the 1950s, African-Americans—subject to Jim Crow laws in other parts of town—were free to own businesses here and built what was often described as a “city within a city.”
