Tremé Congo Square, New Orleans - Tremé is the oldest African-American neighborhood in the United States. In Tremé in the southern corner of Armstrong Park is Congo Square, an open space where the enslaved and free people of color gathered throughout the 19th century for meetings, open markets, and the African dance and drumming celebrations that played a substantial role in the development of jazz.
St. Helena Island, Beaufort - is one of the largest Sea Islands and has one of the largest contiguous Gullah/Geechee communities that still practice the traditions of their African ancestors.
Hog Hammock, Sapelo Island - is a vibrant community of African Americans known as Gullah-Geechees, descendants of enslaved West African people brought to the island in the 1700s and 1800s.
Africa Town, Mobile - is a historic Black community formed by a group of 32 West Africans, who in 1860 were bought and transported against their will in the last known illegal shipment of slaves to the United States.
